Spring Maintenance Services
Dethatching is the process of removing thatch build up from the base of the lawn in order to allow moisture, sunlight and fertilizers to better reach the soil.
Thatch build up is dead, un-decomposed grass stems and roots accompanied by other small debris. The “trapped” material above the soil base creates a barrier that reduces the absorption rate of water and other necessary nutrients. It can also harbor insects and encourage disease. While thatch build up is a natural process for lawns, excessive build up is a very common problem and can easily be diagnosed. Simply use your fingers to move apart your lawn and see how much dead grass has collected before you reach the soil. If you have more than ½" your thatch layer is preventing your lawn from looking its best.
We use two methods for removing thatch build up and recommend you to evaluate your needs in early spring:
Using mower mounted tine rake dethatchers are the most common. We mount a dethatcher to the front of our lawn mower. The dethatcher tines pick and pull out thatch. Simultaneously, the mower “vacuums” up the debris into its bagger. This way the mower blades are engaged. The added bonus of this method is that the lawn also gets cut and bagged. This method of dethatching is less expensive and we recommend doing it on an annual basis every spring, especially to thicker lawns.
Rotary operated dethatcher – This method is much more invasive to the lawn. While the build up of thatch must be addressed if it is a problem, only severe thatch build up is recommended for this method. It is the same concept as the mower mounted machine, thatch is agitated by small blades and then pulled up. It is then vacuumed up and discarded.
Peter Doran Lawn & Landscape offers both residential and commercial mowing. Our mowing service includes line trimming, edging and blowing. We trim or edge along foundation of your home or office, fence lines, trees, flower beds, sidewalks and curbs. Our powerful blowers add the finishing touch by removing debris from the hard surfaces around your home.
Lawn maintenance usually requires attentive weed control. The first application is one of the most effective ways to control weeds by applying pre-emergent herbicide. This is a chemical treatment that prevents unwanted growth from appearing.
Spring Clean-up service is done in April (as soon as weather permits). We use Stihl back pack blowers to cleanup leaves and debris from around buildings, under decks, landscape beds, driveways and sidewalks. Our commercial mowers are equipped with vacuum collection systems and a dethatcher rake on the front. The dethatcher tines pick and pull out thatch simultaneously as the mower “vacuums” up the debris into its bagger. This cleans up all the lawn areas leaving you with a clean estate.
We clean gutters on residential or commercial buildings.

It’s important to keep the flow of movement in your gutters. If not properly maintained they can create run off onto your siding, leaving permanent damage or stains on your walls. Your gutters can also become moldy and rotten to the point of detaching completely from your home or business.
Clean gutters are not just important for appearances, but necessary to improve the look of your building. We suggest gutter cleaning at least 2x per year, during the spring and fall usually to coordinate with the rainy season and to prevent costly repairs.
Wayzata - Summer Maintenance Services
Our bush and shrub trimming service is recommended to keep your yard looking beautiful throughout the year.
Lawn fertilization & weed control is sometimes called “weed and feed".
Our licensed technicians use the safest methods to protect your property, family, pets and the environment. The result is a healthy, beautiful lawn, which resists harmful diseases and insects. There are four facets to our Lawn Care Program.
We provide five fertilizer treatments throughout the growing season. These treatments supply all the necessary nutrients at the appropriate times needed to maintain a vigorous turf (nitrogen, phosphorus, & potassium). This service also includes four treatments of weed control. These treatments will control annual grassy weeds as well as all broadleaf weeds.
Here are the key benefits of proper lawn care fertilizing and weed control:
• Thicker, greener turf
• Fewer weeds
• A healthier more attractive lawn
• A heartier more stress-resistant lawn

The edging service defines the concrete borders of your lawn and gives it a clean manicured look. Turf overgrowth (both grass and soil) onto concrete is natural and can take away from the overall appearance of your lawn. Edging removes this overgrown turf and gives your lawn a crisp razor sharp edge appearance. The more often you edge, the less overgrowth there is. This makes it easier for us and at drastically reduced rates. It also keeps your edges looking good all season.
Wayzata - Fall Maintenance Services
Over time the surface of your lawn can become tightly compacted and covered with dense thatch. This is a layer of dead stems and roots. When this happens, much of the food and water your lawn needs can’t penetrate the surface.
Core Aeration is simply a method of punching holes into the turf to allow moisture, oxygen, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Aeration reduces soil compaction, enhances thatch breakdown, improves water infiltration and improves response to fertilizer. This service also improves soil composition and maximizes turfgrass rooting. Most importantly it makes the lawn less susceptible to damage from weeds, insects, drought and disease.
Aeration combined with overseeding is an excellent method for an established lawn to relieve compaction and improve its density. We recommend aeration & overseeding once per season to all established lawns. Peter Doran Lawn & Landscape uses top quality seed that is free of noxious weeds.
Fall cleanup service is done in late October or early November. Fall cleanup is vital part of reducing the amount of leaf mold and keeping a healthy lawn. We use Stihl back pack blowers to cleanup leaves and debris from under decks, driveways, sidewalks, shrubs, and rock/mulch areas. Our commercial mowers are equipped with vacuum collection systems that clean up lawn areas leaving you with a clean estate.
After the cleanup, the collected debris can be disposed of in one of the following ways: there is a place in yard, bag for garbage man or we will haul and dispose of debris for you.
We recommend a late fall fertilization program which uses a slow release nutrient program to best prepare your yard for the winter months.

IF YOU HAVE NOT OVERSEEDED YOUR LAWN IN THE LAST 4 YEARS, IT NEEDS TO BE MADE AS DENSE AS BRAND NEW SOD!Overseeding is one of the most important lawn care tasks, yet few homeowners ever do it. So, you ask, if I fertilize my lawn properly, why do I need to add new seed, especially if my grass looks pretty good right now? The answer is grass is not immortal. After five or six years, grass plants will slow down their reproduction rates; they get tired just like we do as we age. Thin grass invites weeds. Thicker grass looks professionally maintained and maintains its health.
Repairing Damaged Lawn
What You Need to Know how to remove dead lawn
Regular fertilization gives
grass plants consistent uniform
nutrition.
The best defense is to keep your lawn healthy by fertilizing and topdressing with organic material (with Organic compost and or gypsum soil conditioner )once a year. Mow your lawn correctly and aerate it periodically to discourage thatch buildup and soil compaction.
Even with the best care, bare, thin, or weedy patches occasionally develop in certain areas. Deal with these problems as soon as possible so the damage doesn't spread. Weeds rapidly will fill in bare areas if you don't populate that space promptly with new grass.
Repairing a lawn problem is a two-step process. First, try to determine the underlying cause. Sometimes an accident, such as a fertilizer spill, creates a bare spot in the lawn. Or the cause might be chronic disease, destructive insects, or competition for light and moisture from overgrown neighboring plants. Correct these deficiencies first, or your repair efforts will be futile.
The best way Give a thin, tired lawn new vitality and disease resistance by aeration service and renovating seeding or overseeding it with new grass seed. In minnesota twin city , do this in the fall (mid Aug. to 1st Oct.), so the cool-season grasses have time to develop strong roots (adding starter fertilizer with phosphorus drasticly improves root growth)before they have to face summer scorching temperatures. If you need to seed in the spring the earlyer the better and keep your hose handy as sping changes to summer. seed needs to stay damp and seedlings CAN NOT DRY OUT or they are toast!
Where lawn quality is unacceptable, renovation may be necessary. Renovation involves planting grass seed into an existing lawn area, often adding new grass varieties to repair damage or increase tolerance to drought, shade, or wear. Renovation is for those who are serious about getting there lawn back under control!
